Useful phrase
Je voudrais: a simple phrase that opens many doors.
Je voudrais means I would like. It is one of the most useful French phrases for ordering, asking, and speaking politely.
Why not just je veux?
Je veux means I want. It is grammatically correct, but it can sound direct or demanding in many everyday situations. Je voudrais softens the request.
Compare: Je veux un café sounds like I want a coffee. Je voudrais un café sounds like I would like a coffee.
Use it with a noun
- Je voudrais un billet. I would like a ticket.
- Je voudrais une table pour deux. I would like a table for two.
- Je voudrais ce livre. I would like this book.
Use it with an infinitive
You can also place an infinitive verb after it: Je voudrais réserver, I would like to reserve. Je voudrais essayer, I would like to try.
A restaurant example
Bonjour, je voudrais une salade et un verre d'eau, s'il vous plaît.
Hello, I would like a salad and a glass of water, please.
This single sentence includes three useful habits: greeting first, polite request, and s'il vous plaît.
Practice pattern
Make five sentences starting with Je voudrais. Use things you might actually ask for: a coffee, a ticket, a table, information, help.
