Grammar
Le, la, l', les: the French way to say the.
French nouns usually travel with an article. Learning articles early helps you learn gender, number, and natural sentence rhythm.
The basic forms
- le for masculine singular: le café, the coffee.
- la for feminine singular: la maison, the house.
- l' before a vowel sound: l'ami, the friend; l'eau, the water.
- les for plural: les livres, the books.
Articles help you remember gender
Instead of memorizing maison = house, memorize la maison. Instead of livre = book, memorize le livre. The article becomes part of the word in your memory.
Use definite articles for general ideas
French often uses le, la, or les where English uses no article.
- J'aime le café. I like coffee.
- Elle aime la musique. She likes music.
- Les enfants apprennent vite. Children learn quickly.
Small habit
When you learn a noun, say the article out loud. La table, le train, l'école, les amis. This makes grammar feel less separate from vocabulary.
