Everyday grammar
On: the little word that makes French sound natural.
On is one of the most common words in spoken French. It can mean we, people, someone, or you in a general sense.
On often means we
In conversation, French speakers frequently use on instead of nous. The verb after on uses the same form as il or elle.
- On va au cinéma. We are going to the movies.
- On mange à huit heures. We are eating at eight.
On can mean people in general
On parle français au Québec. People speak French in Quebec. On ne sait jamais. You never know.
Why learners should use it
Nous is correct, especially in formal writing, but on is lighter and very common in daily speech. Learning it helps you understand real conversations faster.
Remember the verb form
Even when on means we, the verb is singular: on est, on a, on va. Do not say on sommes.
Try replacing some nous sentences with on. You will immediately sound more conversational.
