Conversation
Tu or vous? The small choice that changes the tone.
French has two ways to say you. The grammar is simple; the social meaning is the interesting part.
Use vous when you need distance or respect
Vous is the polite or plural form. Use it with people you do not know, people in service situations, older adults you are meeting for the first time, and professional contacts.
Examples: Vous avez une table ? Do you have a table? Vous pouvez répéter ? Can you repeat?
Use tu when the relationship is close or casual
Tu is used with friends, family, children, and many classmates or close colleagues. It creates a more relaxed relationship.
Examples: Tu viens demain ? Are you coming tomorrow? Tu veux un café ? Do you want a coffee?
When in doubt, start with vous
If you are not sure, vous is the safer choice. The other person may say On peut se tutoyer, which means we can use tu with each other.
Listen for the verb ending
The pronoun changes the verb: tu es, vous êtes; tu as, vous avez; tu veux, vous voulez.
A useful mini-dialogue
Bonjour, vous avez une minute ?
Hello, do you have a minute?
Oui, bien sûr.
Yes, of course.
Merci. Vous pouvez m'aider ?
Thank you. Can you help me?
The rule is not about fear. It is about reading the situation. Vous opens politely; tu brings people closer.
