Everyday French questions: three ways to ask.
Bonjour ! As a French teacher, one of the most common hurdles I see beginners face is asking questions. French questions can be formal, neutral, or highly conversational. You do not need to master every structure at once, but you should absolutely recognize the main three to sound natural.
1. Intonation (Casual)
The easiest and most common spoken pattern among friends is simply a statement with rising intonation at the end of the sentence. It requires zero grammar changes!
« Tu viens ? » (Are you coming?)
« Vous avez une table ? » (Do you have a table?)
2. Est-ce que (Neutral & Safe)
Est-ce que (literally "is it that") is your magic phrase. Placing it at the beginning turns any standard statement into a clear question. It is useful, completely neutral, and the most reliable tool for beginners in daily life.
« Est-ce que tu parles anglais ? » (Do you speak English?)
« Est-ce que c'est ouvert ? » (Is it open?)
3. Inversion (Formal)
Inversion involves swapping the subject and the verb, connecting them with a hyphen. This sounds much more formal or written. While it is useful to recognize, you do not need to use it much at first, unless you are using highly polite set phrases.
« Parlez-vous français ? » (Do you speak French?)
« Avez-vous une table ? » (Do you have a table?)
Question words
Once you know the three structures, you can plug in essential question words: où (where), quand (when), comment (how), pourquoi (why), and combien (how much or how many).
« Où est la gare ? » (Where is the station?)
« Combien ça coûte ? » (How much does it cost?)
For daily speaking on your next trip to France, mastering basic intonation and est-ce que will carry you far. Keep it simple, and do not be afraid to make mistakes!
