Bonjour ! As a French teacher, if I could give you only one phrase to navigate your entire trip to France, it would be this one. Je voudrais translates to "I would like." It is universally polite, incredibly versatile, and the absolute best way to order, ask, and speak respectfully in daily life.
Why not just "je veux"?
I often hear beginners use je veux (I want) because it is shorter and easier to remember. While it is grammatically correct, it is a cultural mistake. In many everyday situations, je veux sounds extremely direct, demanding, or even child-like to a French ear. Je voudrais softens your request and shows respect for the person helping you.
« Je veux un café. » (I want a coffee - Too direct!)
« Je voudrais un café. » (I would like a coffee - Perfect and polite.)
Use it with a noun
The easiest way to use this phrase is to simply attach the noun (the thing you want) right to the end of it. You can use this for buying tickets, asking for a table, or shopping.
